High-Pressure SRTP Slurry Pipeline for Australian Iron Ore Mining Project
Project Location: Australia / Western Australia Mining Infrastructure
Products Applied: DN315mm / DN280mm PN40 (4.0 MPa) Steel Wire Reinforced PE Composite Pipe (SRTP / SRCP)
High-pressure PN40 steel wire mesh reinforced polyethylene composite piping (SRTP/SRCP) engineered by DEF PIPELINE for a premier Australian iron ore mine, sustaining 4.0-5.2 MPa operating slurry pressures and extreme abrasion across 5+ km rugged terrain.
Project Background: Extreme Demands of Tailings Slurry Conveyance
A world-renowned iron ore mining operator in Western Australia required an uncompromising overland pipeline system to transport heavy tailings slurry over a distance exceeding 5 kilometers. Standard piping solutions encountered severe technological limits due to the aggressive nature of the application:
Tailings slurry is dense with sharp, angular mineral particulates driven under continuous operating pressures above 4.0 MPa, with localized pump surges reaching 5.2 MPa. Standard solid-wall polyethylene (HDPE) pipes cannot economically meet such ultra-high pressure ratings, while conventional carbon steel lines suffer rapid erosive wear and chemical corrosion, leading to costly shutdowns.
- Ultra-High Working Pressure: Stable operation at 4.0 MPa (PN40) with structural safety margins accommodating 5.2 MPa transient surges.
- Severe Particle Abrasion & Slurry Corrosion: Intense scouring by high-velocity iron ore tailings requiring an abrasion-resistant internal contact surface.
- Challenging Topographical Terrain: Route traversed rugged Australian outback terrain, requiring flexibility and thermal expansion adaptation without brittle joint failure.
- Zero-Failure Continuous Operation: Mining production is continuous; any pipeline blowout or joint leak incurs catastrophic operational downtime and severe environmental penalties.
- Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): Demanding a 50+ year design life to drastically reduce maintenance frequency and replacement capital expenditure.
DEF PIPELINE High-Pressure SRTP Composite Solution
Henan DEF Pipeline Technology Co., Ltd. engineered an optimal composite piping system deploying our Steel Wire Reinforced Polyethylene Composite Pipe (SRTP / SRCP):
High-Tensile Steel Wire Mesh Core
Constructed with a continuous high-strength winding steel wire mesh reinforcement bonded between polyethylene matrices via specialized adhesive resin. The steel skeleton absorbs the vast majority of internal burst pressures, enabling thin wall profiles to reliably sustain PN40 (4.0 MPa) continuous slurry conveyance.
4 to 7 Times the Wear Resistance of Steel
The interior layer utilizes high-density wear-resistant polyethylene lining with an ultra-smooth Hazen-Williams coefficient (C=150). It delivers 4 to 7 times the abrasion resistance of standard mild carbon steel pipes under high-concentration abrasive slurries, dramatically extending operational service life.
Total Chemical & Electrochemical Immunity
With an all-plastic inner contact boundary, SRTP completely eliminates the pitting, scaling, and electrochemical galvanic corrosion typical of metallic slurry lines. It requires no cathodic protection or internal epoxy re-coating throughout its entire 50+ year service envelope.
Terrain Adaptability & Secure Flange Assemblies
Pre-fabricated at the DEF factory with precision carbon steel backup flanges and PE stub ends. The inherent longitudinal flexibility easily conforms to the natural undulations of the Australian outback without requiring excessive directional fittings, accelerating on-site mechanical tie-in.
Operational Verification & Industry Partnership
“Since being commissioned, the SRTP pipeline system supplied by Henan DEF Pipeline has operated flawlessly under continuous 4.0 MPa high-slurry flow, with performance significantly exceeding our project benchmarks. In terms of wear resistance, pressure integrity, and adaptability across our rugged mining geography, DEF’s composite pipe has proven to be the ultimate answer for high-wear, long-distance slurry transport. Beyond premium manufacturing, DEF provided one-stop technical coordination from spool detailing to logistics, making them a truly trusted strategic partner in Australian mining infrastructure.”
